Reflect: Your textbook, Film: From Watching to Seeing, distinguishes between story and plot, stating that story is what happens in a movie, and plot is how it happens. The distinction may seem minor; however, throughout this course, you will be scrutinizing the various aesthetic choices and cinematic techniques that work together to create meaning, develop characters’ motivations, and advance the plot in any film. With that in mind, you can see that how a film presents action can be very important to how we interpret narratives and understand meaning. Developing your skills in interpreting narratives and summarizing them can be useful beyond the scope of this course in your careers and personal relationships. A logline is a one-sentence description of a film’s story. Example: After training with his mentor, Batman begins his fight to free crime-ridden Gotham City from corruption. A plot summary is a compressed description of what happens in the film and why. Example: After the murder of his parents, billionaire orphan Bruce Wayne travels the far reaches of the globe in search of greater meaning. Somewhere in central Asia, he finds a mentor in Henri Ducard and his band of shadowy assassins, led by Ra’s Al Ghul. When Bruce realizes the object of their plot to destroy evil is his home of Gotham City, he foils their plan and escapes to return to the familiar world. Back in Gotham, Bruce adopts the persona of the Batman, and sets out to rid the city of the organized crime that plagues it. Before long, he learns that Ra’s Al Ghul has survived and continues to carry out his plan to bring Gotham to its knees. Bruce, as Batman, races to get to the bottom of their evil plot and stop impending destruction. Summarize the story of your chosen film (what happens) in a one-sentence logline. Summarize the plot of your chosen film (what motivates the sequence of events) in a plot summary of about five sentences. Discuss whether the action in your film is chronological or nonlinear. In your discussion, address the following: What are some of the effects of this choice on the viewer? How are elements like character development or foreshadowing impacted by the choice of storytelling methods? You must use at least two outside sources, in any combination of embedded video clips, still photos, or scholarly sources. Certain films, like The Breakfast Club, Boyz n the Hood, Juno, Call Me by Your Name, Moonlight, or West Side Story, might resonate with us at a particular stage of our lives and help us make sense of our own experiences. Other films, such as Do the Right Thing, The Big Short, The Hate U Give, Dallas Buyers Club, American Sniper, Get Out, or Parasite, directly address deeper social issues and affect our various perspectives. Are there specific instances when this has been true for you? If so, what are they and why? Reflect: In 150 to 200 words address the following points: Introduce yourself and state your major.
