Overview
To complete this assignment, you need to write about a psychology- or psychiatry-related career path that you know (almost) nothing about. If you want to write about a non-psychology/non- psychiatry career, seek permission from your instructor first. You do not need to ask about the following career paths—they are fine: dentist, doctor, lawyer, art/music/sex therapist, counselor, human resources positions, management, or marketing.
You must use three or more credible sources. You may not use Wikipedia, About.com, online interviews, pop culture magazines (print or online), social media, blogs, or vlogs. Often, these sites contain incorrect information about psychology careers. You may interview an expert as one of your sources if you want (but it is not required). You may use an online interview with an expert, but only with the permission of your instructor. Please see Chapter 3 (section 3.3) in The Psychology Major: Career Options and Strategies for Success for tips on finding and using career information. The following sources are recommended: Occupational Outlook Handbook (https://www.bls.gov/ooh/) and O*Net (https://www.onetonline.org/) .
At Penn State, referencing, using, or copying someone else’s ideas, words, or images without crediting the creator/author is a form of dishonesty and disrespect (to the creator/author). It is considered an academic integrity violation, and it can result in harsh penalties/sanctions. See the section below on citing sources, and ask your instructor if you have any questions about plagiarism!
After you pick a career for this assignment, interview two friends about that career (the interview questions are below), and save their answers so you can write about them. If they give long responses, you may summarize in a sentence or two. For example, you could say something like, “When asked about the duties of a college professor, my friend said that they need to grade, instruct, and advise.” If you attribute your friend’s comments to your friend (e.g., “My friend said…”), you do not need to cite your friend in the body of the paper or include them in your Bibliography/Works Cited section. However, you do need to attribute and cite all other sources in the body of your paper and include them in a Bibliography/Works Cited section.
To answer the questions below, you must put all information into your own words (called “paraphrasing”), and you may not copy and paste from the source or quote your source (exception: you may quote your friends). Every time you paraphrase or mention an idea you found in a source,

you must include an in-text citation in the body of your paper and list the source in the Bibliography/Works Cited section. Review the academic integrity section of the course syllabus and information below for more information about this.
Directions
To complete the assignment, answer the following questions:
1. What career did you choose? 2. How did your friends answer the following questions?
A. What qualifications (knowledge, skills, and abilities) do people need to be successful in this career?
B. What specific degree/education do people need to get this/work in this career? C. What tasks and duties do people in this job/career do? D. Typically, how much do people in this job/career earn each year?
3. Using the information you found in your sources, answer the following questions thoroughly: A. What qualifications (knowledge, skills, and abilities) do people need to be successful in your
career? In your opinion, which one or two are the most important (you may not say that they are all important)? Explain. Which of your friends was most correct? Explain.
B. What specific degree/education/licensure/certifications/training do people need to get a job in this career? Does it have to be a psychology degree? Is a bachelor’s degree enough? A master’s degree? A doctoral degree? Which of your friends was most correct? Explain.
C. What tasks and duties do people in this job/career do? In your opinion, which one or two are the most important (you may not say that they are all important)? Explain. Which of your friends was most correct? Explain.
D. Typically, how much do people in this job/career earn each year? Which one of your friends’ answers was closest?
4. What did you learn about the career that surprised you most? Why was this surprising? If nothing surprised you, you did not look hard enough. Keep looking. 🙂
5. What sources did you use? Title this section of your paper “Bibliography/Works Cited.”
Submitting Your Paper
Take care to upload the correct version of your paper. Your instructor will grade the version you submit, even if it is not the version you intended to submit.
Citing Sources
Regardless of whether you know something is true, if something is not well-known, generally you must cite the source. For this class, a good rule of thumb is this: If 9 out of 10 people you find at a grocery/food store would not know the fact you are writing about (e.g., school psychologists must

do a lot of paperwork), then you must cite the source, even if you learned that information previously.
Whenever you use any resource, you must cite it in the body of your paper and include it in your Bibliography/Works Cited section. You may use APA format if you want to, but you do not have to. Either way, for in-text citations in the body of your paper, list the author of the source. Include both the title and the author of the source when you include it in your bibliography. If you use a website, you may list the URL (web address) instead of the author for in-text citations and in your Bibliography/Works Cited section. We do check sources, so make sure your sources are accurate. At Penn State, including inaccurate sources is an academic integrity violation (called “fabrication”), which can result in penalties/sanctions that can be harsh.
At Penn State, students are responsible for understanding and avoiding plagiarism. We have found that many students think they know what plagiarism is and how to avoid it and are surprised when they are penalized for plagiarizing unintentionally. Information on Turnitin
For this class, you will be submitting all your written assignments through Turnitin. You do not go to the Turnitin website or create an account. Just submit your written assignment in the assignment’s drop box inside of Canvas.
If you have never used Turnitin before, it is a program that looks to see if your paper is like other documents. Throughout this class, you have the opportunity to practice proper citing and paraphrasing from your source material. After you submit your work, a similarity score will appear next to your paper—it may take a few minutes to 1 day, depending on how many times you have submitted your work. The higher the percentage, the more similar your paper is to other papers, books, research articles, and so on. You may be wondering what your percentage should be. There is no right number. Some papers with a very low percentage are paraphrased poorly or even plagiarized. Select the percentage score to view your report. Turnitin explains how to navigate the report (https://help.turnitin.com/feedback-studio/turnitin-website/instructor/the-similarity- report/viewing-similarity-matches.htm) . You are encouraged to review your report and understand
