Interviewing skills in the social work field are competencies that contribute to productive conversations with clients. The interview reveals important information about the clients history, needs, and challenges ad help build a rapport with them. In the mock interview what was most beneficial to me was the questions. Starting off with general questions to open up conversation ad break the ice. Asking how are you today and what was it that brought you in today helped with creating a relaxed environment. Then following up with open-ended questions such as tell me a little more about yourself? and I see you re into fitness did you play any sports in school? this helps me and the client create an open dialogue and for me to show active listening. It also help give me background information on his social skills with his peers. My engagement techniques consisted of active listening, eye contact, showing compassion when listening to him express his concerns. Shows empathy, letting him know I am concerned about his well-being. I think to improve my interviewing techniques I would like to come up with a note taking strategy. I love to listen and write but I think I write too much and always feel I may miss out on important details. This is what cause me to over do it. I know being detailed is important but i can benefit from using a strategy to try to minimize it. My personal thoughts of what I think I can do, I also asked my social worker in my school for help because she’s seasoned and been doing this for over 35yrs. In helping the client I have to first take care of me and my self-care before I can take care of my client. However, with this client I would suggest joining a social group in his area (fitness activity) this is the clients interest and will help get him back to socializing with peers since he’s become so isolated. I would also suggest following up with his primary care physician due to his stomach issues and seeking therapy for his depression at least twice a week. Afterwards, I would follow up with the client to see how things are going to show my concern for him and what else can be done.
